What to Expect in the First Few Weeks
Bringing home a new puppy is incredibly exciting. You’ve probably spent weeks getting ready, buying toys, choosing a bed and imagining all the adventures you’re going to have together.
But once your puppy arrives, you might quickly realise that puppy life isn't quite as easy as it looks!
There may be sleepless nights, toilet accidents, chewing, crying and a puppy who seems to have endless energy. It’s a big adjustment for you – and an even bigger one for your puppy.
The first few days with your puppy
Your puppy has suddenly left everything they know behind. Their mum, littermates, familiar smells and surroundings have all changed.
So don't worry if they take a little while to settle.
Keep things calm and give them time to explore their new surroundings gradually. Having a quiet, comfortable place where they can rest is important, as is establishing a simple routine for meals, toilet breaks, play and sleep.
Toilet training can also take time. Accidents are completely normal in the early days, so focus on taking your puppy out regularly and rewarding them when they get it right.
Why does my puppy seem so full-on?
Puppies are learning everything from scratch.
They explore with their mouths, have short bursts of energy and are still learning how to settle and control their impulses. Chewing, biting, zoomies and accidents are all common parts of puppyhood.
It doesn't mean you've got a "bad" puppy. It means you've got a puppy!
Don't put pressure on yourself
One of the biggest challenges of getting a new puppy is feeling like you should know exactly what you're doing.
You don't.
And that's OK.
Every puppy is different and develops at their own pace. Some settle quickly, while others need more time. Some pick up toilet training quickly, while others take longer.
Try to focus on the small wins rather than expecting everything to happen immediately.
The relationship you're building with your puppy is more important than getting everything perfect.
