Helping Your Dog Settle Into Autumn

21 September 2026

Back to Routine

September often feels like a bit of a reset. The holidays are over, the kids are back at school and many of us are getting back into our usual work and daily routines.

For our dogs, that change can take a little getting used to too. After a summer of more time together, later mornings and extra walks, suddenly being left alone for longer periods can be a bit of an adjustment. So, as we head into autumn, here are a few simple dog care tips to help your dog settle back into their routine.

Get Back into a Routine Gradually

If your dog has enjoyed a more relaxed summer, try to get their usual mealtimes, walks and rest periods back on track.

Dogs tend to thrive on routine, and having a predictable day can help them feel settled and know what to expect.

Keep your dog active and entertained

As our routines get busier, it can be easy for dog exercise and enrichment to get pushed down the list.

A good walk is great, but dogs also benefit from opportunities to sniff, explore, play and use their brains. A few minutes of training, a puzzle toy or a simple sniffing game at home can all help keep your dog mentally stimulated.

And remember, exercise doesn't always have to mean a long walk. Playing together, practising some training or giving your dog time to explore and sniff can all be valuable parts of their day.

Think about your dog's time alone

If your dog is suddenly spending more time at home while you're back at work, consider how they're coping with the change.

Some dogs are perfectly happy with more time at home, while others enjoy having a break in their day for some company, exercise and interaction.

Doggy daycare can be one option for helping to break up the week, giving your dog time to play, socialise and enjoy some enrichment while you're at work.

Make the most of the changing weather

September & October can bring a bit of everything – warm afternoons, cooler mornings and plenty of wet weather!

Keep an eye on the temperature and adjust walks and activities accordingly.

As the evenings start getting darker, it's also worth making sure you and your dog can be seen when you're out and about.

Don't forget to enjoy autumn together

There's lots to look forward to as the seasons change. Cooler walks, muddy adventures and plenty of new smells to investigate! Whether your dog is happiest charging around with their friends, enjoying a long sniffy walk or curling up for a well-earned rest afterwards, getting back into a good routine can help make the transition into autumn easier for everyone.
