Autumn is a lovely time to get out and about with your dog, with crisp walks, fallen leaves and plenty to explore. However, the season also brings a few hazards to be aware of, both outdoors and at home.
Here are some simple tips to help keep your dog safe this autumn.
Mushrooms & Fungi
Wild mushrooms and fungi are common during autumn, but some can be poisonous to dogs. Keep a close eye on your dog during walks and discourage them from sniffing, licking or eating any wild fungi.
Conkers & Acorns
Fallen conkers and acorns can be tempting for curious dogs, but both can be harmful if eaten. They can cause stomach upsets and, in some cases, more serious problems. Try to keep your dog away from them on walks.

Wet Weather & Cooler Days
Autumn often means muddy paths, wet paws and slippery walks. Wipe your dog's paws and belly after being outside to remove mud and dirt, and make sure they have a warm, dry place to rest when they get home.
Halloween Treats
Halloween sweets and chocolate can be dangerous for dogs. Keep all treats well out of reach, particularly chocolate and sweets containing xylitol, an artificial sweetener that is toxic to dogs. Make sure children know not to share their treats with their four-legged friends.
Candles & Decorations
Halloween decorations can be tempting for curious dogs, especially anything that moves, glows or can be chewed. Keep candles, electrical decorations and small or chewable items safely out of reach to avoid burns, injuries or accidental swallowing.
Enjoy a Safe Autumn!
With a little extra care, you and your dog can enjoy everything autumn has to offer. Keep an eye out for seasonal hazards, take care on muddy walks and make sure your dog stays safe, happy and comfortable throughout the season.
If you think your dog has eaten something potentially harmful, contact your vet for advice as soon as possible.
